Gaya, historically Dendi, is a department in the Dosso region in Niger.

Geography

The Department is located in the southwest of the country, bordering Benin and Nigeria. It consists of the Municipality of Gaya and the rural communities Bana, Bengou, Tanda, Tounouga and Yelou. The eponymous capital of the department is Gaya. The area is intersected by numerous valleys. With the Dallol Dallol Maouri Foga and there are two major wadis in the department whose laterite plateau decreases continuously toward a flood plain along the river Niger. The north of the department is part of the Sahel, the southern Sudan to large landscape.

History

The Department Gaya corresponds territorial about the historical region Dendi, which goes back to an eponymous province in the 1591 defunct Songhai Eich. After independence in 1960, Niger's territory into 32 districts ( circonscriptions ) was divided. One of them was the district Gaya. 1964 was divided into seven administrative reform Niger departments, the predecessor of the later regions, and 32 arrondissements, the predecessor of the later departments. As part of the district Gaya was converted into the Gaya district. In 1998, the former arrondissements of Niger in departments were converted, each headed by an appointed Council of Ministers is prefect. Population

The Department has Gaya 2012 261.693 inhabitants according to the census. In the 2001 census, before the dissolution of Dioundiou, there were 253 444 inhabitants in the census 1988 164 103 inhabitants in the census 1977 112 868 inhabitants.
