Dosso (Region)

The Dosso region is one of the seven regions of Niger and is located in the southwest of the country. Its capital is Dosso. The region has 2,040,699 inhabitants ( 2012).

Geography

Due to its southern location Dosso is comparatively rainy and fertile. The Niger River here forms the state border. Dosso is bordered to the north by the Niger Tilabéri region, in the northeast on the Niger Tahoua region, on the southeast by the Nigerian states Kebbi and Sokoto and on the southwest by the Beninese Department Alibori. In geological terms, the region is the Tertiary era attributed.

History

The Dosso region dates back as an administrative unit in 1964 created the department of Dosso. 1998 Dosso was converted as all previous Nigerien departments in a region. At the same time emerged from the former arrondissements departments, which is why there is still a department called Dosso, however, the former corresponds to Dosso district and is an administrative level below the present region.

Population

The two largest ethnic groups in the region are the Zarma and Songhai with 48% and the Hausa with 42% of the total population. Other ethnic groups are the Fulani Dosso with 9 % and the Tuareg with 1%.

Economy and infrastructure

In the region of Dosso, there are 549 primary schools, three of which are private schools. The gross enrollment rate was in the school year 2009/2010 73% ( nationwide 72.9 % ) in girls 61.2 % ( nationwide 63.9 %). At a primary school teacher average of 37 students ( 39 nationwide ) came. The primary school completion rate was 52.1 % ( nationwide 49.3 %), 41.4 % in girls ( 41.5 % nationally ).

Subdivision

The Dosso region is divided into eight departments Boboye, Dioundiou, Dogondoutchi, Dosso, Falmey, Gaya, Loga and Tibiri.
