Dogondoutchi is a department in the Dosso region in Niger.

Geography

The Department is located in the southwest of the country, bordering Nigeria. It consists of the township and the rural communities Dogondoutchi Dan Kassari, Dogonkiria, Kiéché, Matankari and Soucoucoutane. The eponymous capital of the department is Dogondoutchi.

History

The Department Dogondoutchi belonged to the historical region Aréoua, which fell in 1899 to France. The French colonial administration set up in 1922 a subdivision of Dogondoutchi, which belonged to the circle ( cercle ) of Dosso. After independence in 1960, Niger's territory into 32 districts ( circonscriptions ) was divided.
