Towel Day

The Towel Day ( dt Towel Day ) is a day of remembrance for the British author Douglas Adams. The Towel Day takes place every year since 2001 on May 25.

On this day, fans carry a towel around with the writer himself. This is a throwback to the book The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, in which a towel is referred to as " pretty much the most useful " what you can carry while traveling through the galaxy with it. The hero Arthur Dent takes only a towel on a journey into space, short before the earth a hyperspace express route must give way, and is therefore destroyed.

In the selection of the appointment was not playing a particular historical date a role. Rather, it was a compromise between the desire ' to commit as soon as possible after the death of Douglas Adams this Remembrance Day, and the need to have sufficient lead time to get the message around the world. May 25, has since established itself as a memorial. Other dates that have meaning in relation to Douglas Adams, are February 11 ( the 42nd day of the year ), his birthday (March 11 ) and his death (May 11 ). These were discussed for 2002 as new dates of Towel Day, but not accepted.

Reception in the media

Several media world mention the Towel Day. These include the Norwegian Aftenposten, the television news program NRK Nyheter, and the National Public Radio Los Angeles.

2010, the day of the broadcast Volt was declared in Canada. In Ecuador, the BBC's Radio City offshoot interviewed one of the organizers of the Toronto Towel Day. In the United Kingdom, the radio station Planet Rock brought the 2011 day as the motto of the day. Siren FM brought " Dean Wilkinson & the Importance of International Towel Day ".

2012 committed people in at least 39 countries to Remembrance Day. In January 2012, The Huffington Post Towel Day listed as one of ten cult traditions of literature. The Washington Post, notes that other on the same day Geek Pride Day or a little recognized Star Wars Day celebrations, which have little chance of further spread because of the towel day. In the Hamburg Planetarium, the day was celebrated with a reading in towel brought along, there was a discount. At 19:00 clock was held a meeting of geocachers at the Hamburg Rathaus market. In Bangalore, India gets on this day in many bars and boutiques, a free drink, who has a towel there. The Literary Platform hosted the eleventh day of remembrance an animation competition in which a rare recording of Douglas Adams, as he describes the formation of the Galactic Guide, was animated.
