Trams in Nordhausen

The tram Nordhausen is operated by Stadtwerke Nordhausen Trams running on three lines within the city of Nordhausen and the Harzquerbahn to the surrounding areas by Ilfeld. The track width is 1000 mm.

The first 90 years

In 1898 the city agreed Nordhausen, which then had about 35,000 inhabitants, with the electricity AG (formerly Schuckert & Co., Nuremberg) that this builds a power station and a tram and itself operates. It was not until April 1, 1920, the city owns the company.

The tram service was opened on August 25, 1900 on a meter-gauge network of 5.04 kilometers in length. A line with a white signal led from the train station to the old town to the grain market and pass the Neumarkt to the enclosure at the Vulture's Peak ( 2.6 km ). The other was a ring line ( 2.3 km ), the railway station - with red signal - also to the grain market, then passed through narrow streets to Altentor went and from there via the Grimmel Avenue, where depot and power station were, back to the station. The car in the opposite direction wore a green signal.

After the First World War saw the first restrictions. January 29, 1922, the ride was accounted for by the Old Town between the grain market and Altentor; also ended in 1927, the line to the enclosure already on the Riemann road. When they gave up even the short distance from the road to Stolberg Riemannstraße from July 8, 1934, extended to the track for Pfingstweg / Friedrich- Naumann - road. By 1945, the 4.25 -kilometer-long network of a red line from the station to Pfingstweg and a green line from the station is frequented for Altentor. Funds raised in 1900 13 railcars in 1934 with eight new.

After the occupation of Nordhausen by the Red Army in the summer of 1945 the tram service went from the " Municipal Electric works Nordhausen " in 1949 to the "Municipal Economic Enterprises ( KWU ) of the city of Nordhausen " over and in 1951 for "VEB (K ) transport companies Nordhausen ". Despite the heavy destruction of the city, the tram was put back in the former extent of about four kilometers in operation. Smaller enhancements were only in the eighties; from October 7, 1981 crossed the line 1 of Stolberg road 800 meters to the district hospital and since December 21, 1983 ending the line 2 at the Park Avenue 700 meters from the Altentor.

The development after reunification

With the reunification of Germany in 1990 the existence of the tram was up for discussion; however, it was decided to get the tram. In the following years the rail network from the ground was refurbished and bought new ( old first usable ) vehicles. On October 3, 1993 nor was added a new line, the 1.8 km leads from the theater square in the eastern part of the city. 2004, including the long-planned space closure was completed for Harzquerbahn. Since there are in Nordhausen, the following three tram lines:

Line 10 by Ilfeld

After the reunification came up efforts to connect the two rail networks Nordhäuser tram and the Harz Narrow Gauge Railways (HSB ). This was easily possible because of the conformity of the gauges ( meter gauge ). At the 100th anniversary of the HSB in September 1999 the first HSB and Stadtwerke Nordhausen signed a letter of intent to establish this connection to the State Garden Show in 2004. In 2002, finally, construction began for this gap closure. Here, a track from the tram stop station forecourt along the Oskar Cohn road was built to the sidings of Harzquerbahn at Nordhausen station and there connected to the existing tracks.

However, since the range of Harzquerbahn by Ilfeld has no contact line and electrification was rejected, had to be purchased with hybrid drive for the line designated as Line 10 new vehicles. As part of the celebrations for the 100th anniversary of the tram Nordhausen the first hybrid train Twino was presented on June 3, 2000. These were a with a 5-cylinder car Dieselmoter advanced GT4 railcars that served the practical testing of the hybrid drive. Until 1 May 2004, the city works procured three vehicles of the type Combino duo. Within the city of Nordhausen relate them to their own drive power directly from the contact line; on the tracks of Harzquerbahn the drive is diesel -electric. For diesel-powered vehicles originally intended for cars motor of the BMW brand is built. The combination of meter gauge and diesel drive in is a unique type of implementation of the so-called Karlsruhe model.

The trams run since then continuously from the hospital Nordhausen on the station forecourt and for a distance of 11.4 kilometers, across the track of the Harzquerbahn to the breakpoint Ilfeld - Neander clinic. At the same time, much of the railcar of the Harz narrow gauge railway runs since then up to the station forecourt. For this purpose, exercises on the vehicles and an authorization in accordance BOStrab were necessary.

Rolling stock

In liner shipping, new vehicles of the type Combino from Siemens are used exclusively since 2012, of which since 2000 a total of twelve units were procured. Six of these cars are way vehicles ( 101-104,108-109 ), three bi-directional vehicles ( 105-107 ) and three so-called Combino Duo with hybrid drive for the route of Ilfeld ( 201-203 ).
