Transalpine Pipeline

The Transalpine Pipeline (TAL ) (also Transalpine pipeline ) is a crude oil pipeline from the port of Trieste in the Bay of Muggia via Ingolstadt to Karlsruhe.

The pipeline carries a total of 465 km with a diameter of 40 inches ( 1.016 meters) from Trieste to close to Ingolstadt and subsequently with a diameter of 26 inches ( 66 centimeters ) over 21 kilometers to Neustadt an der Donau and over 266 kilometers to Karlsruhe. They crossed the Alps and in this way comes at the Italian- Austrian border in the Carinthian Kötschach- Mauthen to Austria. Here branches off the Adria-Wien Pipeline to Schwechat at Würmlach. At the Austro- Bavarian border near Kufstein, the pipeline reached Germany.

The construction

In 1963 it was found by the American company Bechtel within four months of the feasibility of an oil pipeline across the Alps. One and a half years were needed to obtain rights of way of more than 6,000 owners. After three years of construction, the line was put into operation in 1967. The total cost amounted to 192 million U.S. dollars. The average coverage of the cable is one meter, it reaches a geographical height of up to 1500 m and crosses the main Alpine ridge under the Felber Tauern in a 7.3 km long tunnel. In addition, she continues south through the 6.9 km long Plöcken studs and north of the Felber Tauern through the Hahnenkamm tunnel ( 6.8 km ) at Kitzbühel.

The tubes have been fitted to prevent corrosion with a coating of bitumen mats. To protect against softening of these mats by sunlight during storage or during transport they were painted with white lime.

Infrastructure

The monitoring of the pipeline is up to three control centers in Trieste, Kienburg in Matrei in East Tyrol and in Lenting. The Italian control center is operated by the " Società Italiana per l' Oleodotto Transalpino SpA ", while the branch in Austria the " Transalpine Pipeline in Austria Ges.mbH " is. In Germany the " German Trans Oelleitung GmbH" for the operation is responsible.

Ten pumping stations between Trieste and Karlsruhe provide for the transport of oil. In Lenting and Trieste beyond storage tanks are for intermediate storage of crude oil available.

Connection

Branches of other operators lead to Schwechat ( at Würmlach in Carinthia branches off the AWP from OMV ), Burghausen ( branch of the 12 " OMV - line at the pumping station Steinhöring ) Vohburg on the Danube and Litvinov.

Since the closure of the Central European Line ( CEL) 1997 TAL delivers to the entire crude oil for petroleum refineries in Bavaria and the Bavarian Chemical Triangle. 2010 34.5 million tons were transported, since the beginning of operation in 1967 a total of 1.18 billion tons.
