Transport Act 1985

The Transport Act 1985 was an Act of Parliament of the United Kingdom law. He introduced the deregulation of the inner-city bus services in the UK and allowed regulators to deregulate the buses on a trial basis. It was adopted on the initiative of the Conservative government of Margaret Thatcher. The supra-local bus service was deregulated by the Transport Act 1980 already.

Deregulation was true for all operators of local bus services within the whole of the UK except for the administrative area of Greater London.

The deregulation came into force on 26 October 1986. The local authorities were asked to transfer their owned bus lines to separate companies that were not under the direct control of the authorities. Most of these municipal enterprises were privatized, with few exceptions. For Greater London a franchising system has been introduced.
