TranzAlpine

The TranzAlpine train is one of the long-distance passenger transport between Christchurch and Greymouth on the South Island of New Zealand. The name comes from the driveway of the train, which crosses the Southern Alps on his journey.

Route

The train runs since November 22, 1987, replacing the then existing express trains between Christchurch and Greymouth. He utilizes essentially the " Midland Line" railway line. The train is due to the interesting scenic route mainly for tourism is important. The length of the route is 223 km. On this route ( including the Staircase Viaduct at 73 m height ) and crosses 16 tunnels are 5 viaducts crossed. The longest tunnel is the Otira tunnel under the 920 m high Arthur's Pass with 8550 m length.

Operation

The connection is operating since October 1, 2008 by the Division Kiwi Rail Scenic Journeys of KiwiRail, a state railway. The train starts in the morning in Christchurch and the journey takes 4.5 hours. After a one-hour stay in Greymouth heading back, so that the evening train arrives back in Christchurch. Support are:
