The alliance agreement in Copenhagen in 1709, was a Danish- Russian offensive and defensive alliance and was on 11 Oktoberjul. / October 22 1709greg. closed in the Danish capital Copenhagen between the Danish King Frederick IV and the Russian Tsar Peter the Great. The contract was a renewal of the already in 1699 concluded between Denmark - Norway and Russia treaty of alliance.

Prehistory

Through the renewal of the treaty of alliance with Saxony and the obligation contained therein Denmark, also to close a treaty of alliance with Russia against Sweden, was started after the Epiphany meeting in Berlin with the negotiations.

The negotiators of the Treaty

The Tsar ordered his ambassador to Denmark to negotiate the Prince Vasily Dolgorukov Lukich together with the negotiators of Denmark Otto Grabbe the details of the contract.

The contract

In the contract Denmark announced at the peace of Traventhal. Denmark committed to attack the Swedish province of Skåne from Norway in the autumn of the year. In addition, the Danish fleet should employ the Swedish flotilla in their own waters, so that Russia can develop undisturbed its fleet.

Russia committed itself in the Swedish provinces of Finland and Livonia, and - together with the Saxons - invade Poland. Both monarchs pledged to support Augustus the Strong best efforts in regaining of the Polish king.

Furthermore, the signatories pledged to refrain from separate peace negotiations during the further struggle against Sweden. Only if both Parties and Saxony agreed a peace negotiation, this is likely to take place.

A fixed goal of the contract was to Sweden back in the "old limits " push back.

Also in this contract was decided to include the Kingdom of Prussia in the alliance against Sweden as soon as the Prussian King Friedrich I so desired.

In a secret addendum to the contract undertake the two States which already conquered and defend gained in the course of the war against Sweden territories mutually best efforts.

The consequences

In November 1709, the Danes invaded in Skåne. But they were beaten by the Swedish Field Marshal Magnus Stenbock and had to withdraw in 1710.

Denmark conquered in summer 1712 the Swedish duchies of Verden and Bremen.
