Treaty of Kremmen

The Treaty of Kremmen was posted on June 20, 1236 between the Margrave John I and Otto III. of Brandenburg, on the one hand and Duke Wartislaw III. of Pomerania on the other hand completed. With him Wartislaw recognized III. Brandenburg's suzerainty and came from areas of Brandenburg.

Prehistory

In the 1230s years, the two Pomeranian Dukes of grasping house, Wartislaw were III. and his cousin Barnim I, in a foreign policy difficult situation. In the decades before Pomerania had been found by a reference to Denmark protection. But the capture of King Valdemar II of Denmark in 1223 and the Danish defeat at the Battle of Bornhöved 1227 had the supremacy of Denmark in the Southern Baltic broken.

Pomerania was under pressure from all sides: in 1231, Emperor Frederick II the suzerainty of the Brandenburg Margrave John I and Otto III. confirmed over Pomerania. In the West increased by 1230, the Mecklenburg princes the most part of a Circipania. In the east, the controversial countries Schlawe and Stolp were taken from the Great Pomerania by Duke Swantopolk 1235/36. Denmark also tried to gain again in Pomerania foot, but was repulsed in 1235.

Contract

Duke Wartislaw III. decided to meet Brandenburg far. With the Treaty of Kremmen was determined:

  • Duke Wartislaw III. took his country's part of Pomerania from the Brandenburg Margrave John I and Otto III. fief.
  • In the event that Duke Wartislaw III. would die without leaving sons, his part of the country should fall home to the Marquis as feudal lords.
  • Duke Wartislaw III. entered the country Stargard, Beseritz and Wustrow from at Brandenburg.

Progress

The escheat law of Brandenburg on the part of the country Wartislaws III. in time 1250 was eliminated by the Treaty of Landin. With the Treaty of Landin namely received the Pomeranian Dukes Wartislaw III. and Barnim I the investiture of Pomerania together ( the entire hand). As Wartislaw III. then died childless in 1264, his part of the country fell to Barnim I, who reigned until his death in 1278 as the sole Duke of Pomerania.

The Brandenburg Pomerania suzerainty could shake off late. Under Duke Barnim III. Pomerania was confirmed in 1348 by King Charles IV as imperial immediacy Duchy. But not until 1529 Brandenburg accepted the imperial immediacy of Pomerania, but received in return the right of succession in the event of the extinction of the Griffin house.

Countries Stargard, Beseritz Wustrow and remained lost for Pomerania permanently.
