Treaty of Pilar

The Treaty of Pilar (Spanish: Tratado del Pilar ) was a treaty between the Argentine provinces of Entre Ríos, Santa Fe and Buenos Aires, which is the basis for the federal organization of the country. It was signed in the city of Pilar López Estanislao by the Governor Santa Fe, the caudillo Francisco Ramírez for Entre Rios and the Interim Governor Manuel Sarratea for Buenos Aires on 23 February 1820. This was preceded by the first Battle of Cepeda and the subsequent dissolution of the government.

National unity was achieved through the contract, ended hostilities between the provinces and the armies of the provinces withdrew from Buenos Aires. The contract also included a general amnesty for political prisoners and the navigability of the Río Paraná and Río Uruguay. 60 days after the contract was signed a delegates' meeting held in San Lorenzo ( Santa Fe province ) to decide on the future federal government. Among the delegates, among others belonged José Gervasio Artigas.

The Treaty of Pilar followed the Treaty of Bene gas and two years later, the four-page contract ( Parties of Pilar and the province of Corrientes ).
