Treaty of Zuhab

The Treaty of Qasr -e Shirin, or the Treaty of Zuhab was signed on May 17, 1639 between the Safavids and the Ottomans. It forms from a few details, the border between Iran and the successor states of the Ottoman Empire, Turkey and Iraq. The treaty ended 150 years of sporadic war between the two countries over territorial disputes.

In this long struggle of the forces of Ottoman Sultan Murad IV large areas of Safawidenreiches could conquer. Among them were Yerevan, Tabriz and Baghdad in 1638. Then, then a contract between Murad IV and I. Safi was negotiated. Qasr -e Shirin is in today's Iranian province of Kermanshah.

The contract said to Yerevan in the southern Caucasus Iran, while all of Mesopotamia, including Baghdad fell to the Ottomans. Nevertheless, the border dispute between Iran and the Ottoman Empire did not end. Between 1555 and 1918 no less than 18 contracts were signed on border conflicts. The exact demarcation of the border in accordance with this contract could not be started until the 19th century.
