Tréogat

Tréogat ( Trêgad Breton ) is a commune of 546 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Finistère. The inhabitants are called Tréogatais.

The name Tréogat likely to have been derived from the Breton word for village ( Treb ) and the patron of the local church Saint- Boscat ( Bozgat ), which is composed in its turn from the terms Beuz ( for victory ), and Kad ( for combat ).

Geography

The place is located in the southwest of Brittany, just over 4 miles from the Atlantic coast inland. Plonéour -Lanvern, the largest city of the canton is, just about 4 kilometers south-east and the Préfecture of the department, Quimper is located, about 18 km northeast of Tréogat.

Over and above Quimper connections to the European Route 60 (E 60), and thus the international road network. In Quimper there is also the closest major train station, which is integrated into the network of the TGV Atlantique.

Demographics

The highest population reached Tréogat at the beginning of the 20th century, when nearly 800 residents were counted.

History

The first mention of the town is found in the 14th century, under the name known today Tréogat appears for the first time at the end of the 16th century. Previously, the village belonged to the medieval kingdom and bishopric of Cornwall with its capital in Quimper.

The church of Saint - Boscat dates from the late 14th and the first half of the 15th century. In addition to prehistoric megaliths are numerous remains of medieval religious symbols.
