Treptowers

The Treptowers are a complex of buildings with a striking high-rise building in the district of Alt-Treptow Berlin. The building complex was completed in 1998 is located directly on the River Spree. The name is a portmanteau of Treptowers Treptow and the English word for tower: tower.

History and architecture

The complex consists of four buildings Treptowers and is the result of an architectural competition held in 1993 by the architect Gerhard Spangenberg had won. In the course of a project-based community was formed with the offices of architects Schweger and partners and Reichel Stauth from Braunschweig, which carried out the detailed planning and buildings.

The 125 meters high building highly visible part of the actual Towers is located directly on the river Spree and the Elsenbrücke. He is the tallest office building in Berlin and provides Spreeraum a distinct mark of the city, which fall from afar is visible as a dominant urban center in the Spreetal out of sight and thus marking the end of the dense inner-city development. Architecturally, it involves a point skyscraper on a square plan with a light curtain- steel and glass facade. In the lower third of the edges are covered with natural stones that produce a relation to building height of buildings.

The € 500 million complex incorporates the building of the former Elektro-Apparate -Werke, which had been built in 1926 by AEG. After the Second World War and the expropriation were from the factory, the VEB Elektro-Apparate -Werke Berlin -Treptow, a state-owned enterprise in the GDR. In the listed buildings was produced until 1995.

As the project developer and builder of the new office building for the Roland Ernst urbanism occurred GmbH. After completion, the Allianz SE took over the building as Berlin branch of the company. The Alliance neon sign on the roof is visible in all directions. When first time the illuminated letters to 15 meters were high, but then had to be reduced due to excessive light output especially for air traffic to 8 feet. At night, the tower with its lighting into a striking eye-catcher in the Berlin skyline.

Before the building is on the Spree, the 30 meter high sculpture Molecule Man by Jonathan Borofsky, whose three figures symbolizing the meeting of the three districts Treptow, Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain here at this point. In the Treptowers a permanent exhibition of over 500 works of art by contemporary artists exist. In addition, the Federal Criminal Police Office maintains a branch office within the building.
