Tricky Sam Nanton

Called Joe Nanton, born as Joseph N. Irish, mostly " Tricky Sam" Nanton, ( born 1 February 1904 in New York City; † July 20, 1946 in San Francisco) was an American jazz trombonist, best known for his innovative Growl game (Wa - Wa) in the Duke Ellington Orchestra is known.

Life and work

Nanton was the early 1920s when Cliff Jackson, Frazier's Harmony Five (1923 /4) and Elmer Snowden (1925 ), before joining Duke Ellington in 1926. Here he perfected the trumpeter Bubber Miley already from the Ellington band developed damper game and contributed significantly to characterizing Jungle sound of the band. He played with an inserted into the horn cone dampers in addition to the plunger, what the game is technically very simplified, since the constant readjustment of humor with the lips was reduced. Due to its innovative damper insert which enabled him to imitate the diverse voices of the trumpet, he was nicknamed Tricky Sam. His melodically simple, yet tonally and rhythmically nuanced game, he did realize in a wide range between poignant lament and a humorous imitation of the human voice.

In addition to his involvement in the Ellington band played a Nanton plates with Ellington musicians like Johnny Hodges, Rex Stewart, Sonny Greer and Cootie Williams.

Nanton died in 1946 in a hotel in San Francisco from a stroke after he from health problems ( he was an alcoholic ) already turned out longer times. Ellington looked for it again and again people that resembled Nanton in sound and skill, but never found a suitable replacement.
