2,2,3- trimethylbutane is a chemical compound selected from the group consisting of aliphatic saturated hydrocarbons. It is one of nine constitutional isomers of heptane.

Production and representation

2,2,3- trimethyl occurs in the oil. The connection can be made from cracked gases or by Hydrodealkylation of isooctane and in small amounts by the isomerization of n -heptane. As early as 1927, a laboratory synthesis has been described, wherein the Grignard compound is reacted with t-butyl chloride from acetone. The resulting 2,2,3- trimethyl -3-ol is dehydrated to 2,3,3- Trimethylbut -1-ene and then hydrogenated by Nickelkatalysor for 2,2,3 - trimethylbutane.

Properties

Physical Properties

2,2,3- trimethyl is a flammable, colorless liquid. The vapor pressure function is given by Antoine corresponding log10 (P) = A- ( B / ( T C )) ( P in bar, T in K) with A = 3.9222, B = 1203.362 and C = -46.776 in temperature range 286-355 K. The temperature dependence of the enthalpy of vaporization can be determined according to equation ΔVH0 = A exp ( - βTr ) (1- Tr) β ( ΔVH0 in kJ / mol, Tr = (T / Tc) reduced temperature ) with A = 46, 76 kJ / mol, β = 0.2726 and Tc = 531.1 K describe the temperature range between 298 K and 353 K. In solid phase two polymorphic crystal forms may occur. Below -151.75 ° C, the crystal form II exists, above this temperature the crystal form I. The transition enthalpy of the solid phase transition is 2.242 kJ · mol -1. The crystal form I melts at -25.45 ° C.

The most important thermodynamic properties are listed in the following table:

Safety characteristics

2,2,3- trimethyl forms flammable vapor - air mixtures. The compound has a flash point of -19 ° C. The ignition temperature is 450 ° C. The fabric falls within the temperature class T2.

Use

2,2,3- trimethyl is used as a high quality, very anti-knock aircraft fuel with the octane number 112. In addition, the substance is used as a reference substance in gas chromatography.
