Tristão da Cunha

Tristão da Cunha (* 1460 in Lisbon, † 1540 ) was a Portuguese admiral.

Cunha was the first winner of the title of the Viceroy of India, he received from King Manuel I.. Cunha could but due to a temporary blindness the Office does not compete.

He undertook his most important journey in 1506 when he set out with 15 ships to India on the way. Cunha discovered three volcanic islands in the South Atlantic, one of which - Tristan da Cunha - was named after him. After he had taken from the Arabs of Socotra in the hope that the Portuguese influence on the Red Sea to enlarge Cunha sailed to India.

After his return da Cunha was one of the representatives of the Portuguese royal family to Pope Leo X.. Later he was appointed member of the Portuguese royal council took place. One of his sons, Nuno da Cunha (1487-1539), was Governor of India.
