The dappled sun pointer ( Trithemis kirbyi ) is a dragonfly of the family sailing Dragonflies ( Libellulidae ). There are two recognized subspecies. The Nominatunterart is found in India and Sri Lanka, while Trithemis kirbyi ardens in the rest of the range, which includes predominantly Africa, occurs.

Features

The dappled sun indicator is a medium sized dragonfly with a head-body length of 35-38 mm and a length of the hind wings from 25 to 26.5 mm. In the male head and thorax are strongly colored light red, the abdomen is bright orange. The antenna bases are reddish - brown, the labium is yellowish - brown. The eyes are bright red top and darker down. The thoracic flanks have brown spots and short, black, wavy lines. The wings are veined red and wearing large orange spots that cover directly on the body about one-third of the wing surface. The Pterostigmen are brownish with orange border. On top of the last three abdominal segments are black spots. The females are inconspicuous, yellowish to greenish brown in color with clear wings.

Occurrence

This species lives in stationary and flowing water in forests, grasslands and scrubland. They colonized Africa with the exception of tropical rain forests, Madagascar, the Comoros, India and the Middle East, and is sometimes found in southwestern Europe.
