Trithemis

Violet Sun pointer

The sun pointer ( Trithemis ) are a composed of 42 kinds of dragonflies genus of the subfamily Trithemistinae, which was erected in 1868 by brewer. With few exceptions, the species of the genus in Africa are located.

Features

The sun hands are medium sized dragonflies with some very striking colored males. The color spectrum of styles ranges from red to an intense violet that results from the interaction with a thin blue wax tires. Similarly, black and yellow black eyed species are represented. The females are usually colored in muted brown - yellow tones. Red -colored males may resemble species Sympetrum and Crocothemis.

When the sun pointers the compound eyes are connected for a short distance and have no extension on temporal edge. The trailing edge of the Prothoraxes is three-lobed, the middle lobe is small and completely. The abdomen (abdomen) is narrow, depressed or three sides and is downwards slightly blistered. The genitals emerge on the second segment. The outermost branch of the hamulus is very short and the lobe usually narrow and sickle-shaped. In the females the vagina is uncovered and does not extend the sides of the eighth segment. The wings are usually pointed. The rear pair of wings widens while on approach. The number of Antenodaladern is about nine. The Flügeladerung is solid red or black in the male usually. The Flügelmal ( pterostigma ) is sometimes very long and elongated rectangular. The abdomen attachments are short.

Way of life

Sun pointers are very tolerant of heat. The dragonfly then take an attitude in which they push the wings down and the abdomen shows vertical to the sun. This obelisk position mentioned position brought them also the German trivial name alludes to the exactly aligned with their abdomen to the sun dragonflies. With the exception of Trithemis pallidinervis provide sun indicator species the wing forward when they settle.
