Origin of the name

Origin of the French name (literally, " three virgins " ): Already in Greek and Roman mythology there was the Moirai (also Mören ), goddesses of fate that impart men the proportion alive. Usually called Clotho, Lachesis and Atropos. However, it is more likely that there has been in Ulflingen, as held in the surrounding Asselborn, the three goddesses of the Celtic cult Treverians today. The Celtic Treverians worshiped their Matres Treverae or Matronae Treverae. Not far from the north of Luxembourg, in the Aachen area, we find traces of Matronenkultes, especially among the Germanic Ubii. The three goddesses worship is according to scientific view, a Celto - Germanic cult, which enjoyed a boom especially in the Gallo Roman era. To promote the Christianization, Pope Gregory I converted the pagan cult of the veneration of the three saints " Fides, Spes et Caritas " (Faith, Hope and Love). Troisvierges was known as a place of pilgrimage of the three saints to Belgium (Wallonia), hence the French name ( Nous allons aux Trois- Vierge ).

The German name, as well as the Luxembourg Ulflingen or Ëlwen derived from Ulf, or elf or Alb from what elves means. Since time immemorial folk tales tell of the founding of the town by elves. The suffix ingen indicates a Germanic settlement, which is close to the settlement of the region by the Germanic Franks.

History

Troisvierges is first mentioned in 1353 under the name Ulvelingen. To date, this name is in German on ( Ulflingen ). In the 17th century Ulflingen was a famous place of pilgrimage, and in 1641 there was a Franciscan monastery. During this time, the French name of the location Troisvierges emerged (see Origin of the name ). Troisvierges experienced a major economic and demographic boom in the 19th century. This was connected with the construction of the railway Luxembourg - spa, and the branching in Troisvierges railway line in the direction of Aachen ( Vennbahn ). The latter has since been shut down and rebuilt as Vennbahnradweg.
