Trsteno Arboretum

The Arboretum of Trsteno is located about 18 kilometers northwest of the city of Dubrovnik in southern Croatia. It is the only arboretum on the eastern Adriatic coast and contains the oldest collection of exotic trees and plants in the country.

The garden is located along the coastal road between the villages Orašac and Slano.

History

The Arboretum is detected on the estate of the Dubrovnik aristocratic family Gučetić - Gozze since 1492 ( the exact date is not known). The aqueduct is still in use was built in the same year. The garden was nationalized in 1948 and passed two years later the Croatian Academy of Sciences. Since 1962 the Arboretum stands as a monument of landscape art under state protection.

During the war, Croatia fired early October 1991 gunboats and fighter aircraft of the Yugoslav People's Army, the park and directed both at numerous plants and buildings in the oldest part of the park damage.

Gardens and plant species

The total area of the arboretum is 28 hectares. During the five centuries of its existence can be in landscape architecture elements of the Renaissance, Baroque and Romantic recognize. The terraces are located next to Mediterranean crops such as olives, figs and citrus trees, numerous palm trees, eucalyptus trees, laurel trees, cacti and other exotic plants.

The park covers a total of about 400 species of plants from hundreds of plant families. Among the special attractions include two Oriental plane trees that are located on the central market square of Trsteno. Both are more than five hundred years old. It is unique in Europe, giant trees, its trunk diameter is about five meters.
