Truman A. Merriman

Truman Adams Merriman ( born September 5, 1839 in Auburn, New York, † April 16, 1892 in New York City ) was an American lawyer and politician. Between 1885 and 1889 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Truman Adams Merriman was born seven years before the outbreak of the Mexican - American War in Auburn. He attended Auburn Academy and graduated in 1861 at Hobart College in Geneva. During the Civil War he enlisted in September 1861 in the Union Army. He held the rank of captain of a company of which he dug himself, and which was assigned to the 92nd Regiment of New York Volunteer Infantry. In December 1864 Merriman was retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. He then studied law and in 1867 he obtained his license to practice law. In 1871 he moved to New York City where he worked as a journalist. He was in the years 1882, 1883 and 1884 President of the New York Press Club.

In the congressional elections of 1884 for the 49th Congress Merriman was an independent Democrat in the eleventh electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Orlando B. Potter on March 4, 1885. In 1886, he ran as a Democrat for the 50th Congress. After his successful re-election he resigned in 1888 to run again and he retired after March 3, in 1889 the Congress of.

He died on April 16, 1892 in New York City and was buried in Fort Hill Cemetery in Auburn.
