Trygve Haavelmo

Trygve Magnus Haavelmo ( born December 13, 1911 in Skedsmo, † 28 July 1999 in Oslo) was a Norwegian economist. From 1948 to 1979 he was professor of Social Economics and Statistics at the University of Oslo.

For its formulation of the probability theory foundations of econometrics he received the 1989 Nobel Prize in Economics. After his name the Haavelmo theorem is named after its consequence an increase in government spending may even cause an economic boom if the additional expenditure is financed by tax revenues and thus the private demand is limited. The economic boom generated by a so-called multiplier effect.
