Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto

Tsukuyomi no mikoto or Tsukiyomi no mikoto, Tsuki no kami and Tsukiyumi no mikoto (Japaneseツク(キ)ヨ(ユ)ミ( Kojiki :月 読 命; Nihonshoki :月 読(夜 见)尊,月 弓 尊) ) is a male Kami in mythology of Shinto. He is the brother of Amaterasu and Susanoo and was born from the right eye of Izanagi, when he washed his ritual after his passage to the underworld. From his father Tsukuyomi got the following order: "Your priority is to rule the night Commanded country!"

Its name refers in all probability to the Lunar Calendar ( tsuki means " moon " or " month "; might yomi both " Underworld " and " night " or " darkness " mean, are not generally "count" from the verb yomu ( pre-modern, today, " read " ) is derived ). Karl Florence translated as " moon ", " Mondnächtler ", " Moon Counter" and " Counter".

The 12th century at the Ise - jingū worded font Yamato- bime - seiki shows him in an illustration as a riding a horse man. Within the Shinto - Buddhist syncretism, he was often equated to the Buddha Amida -nyorai (阿 弥陀 如 来).

Unlike his siblings Tsukuyomi is hardly mentioned in the myths. The only exception is an episode in an alternative Nihonshoki version (I, 27) to the effect that he slew the food Kami Ukemochi. All other texts suggest that as this was Susanoo. In this alternate version of the opposition of day and night is justified by the fact that the sun kami Amaterasu was disgusted by Tsukuyomis fact so that she announced to never wanting to see his face again.

Nonetheless, Tsukuyomi is worshiped in many shrines. The most important are the two Tsuki -yomi -no- miya (both Bekku ) in the two main shrines of Ise jingū. In these he is worshiped along with his own ara- Mitama. His shintai is a mirror.

As a main Tsukuyomi Kami takes devotion among others in the following shrines: the Toda -mura Gassan Shrine, in Dewa -san- zan Gassan Shrine, in Masuda -machi Gassan Shrine ( Akita Prefecture), in various Tsuki -yomi -jinja ( Kizukuri -machi, Aomori Prefecture; Kushira -machi, Nishi- sakura- jima ), in Agetsu Shrine in Asuka- hachiman - sha, and in Ōsasa Shrine.

The dogs he shares in Imamiya - ebisu Shrine ( Naniwa -ku, Osaka ) with Waka hiru -me, Koto - shiro - nushi, Amaterasu and Susanoo; Matsue Rokusho Shrine of Amaterasu, Susanoo, Izanagi, Izanami and Ō- Namuchi; in Takahara Shrine ( Tochigi Prefecture) with Ō- Namuchi, Koto - shiro - nushi and Saruda - hiko.
