The Tupelobäume ( Nyssa ) are a genus of flowering plants in the family of Dogwood ( Cornaceae ) from the order of dogwood -like ( Cornales ). The botanical genus name refers to the water need and is the name of a water nymph Nyssa.

Description

Most of Nyssa species are evergreen trees, but Nyssa aquatica, Nyssa sylvatica, Nyssa Nyssa javanica ogeche and are deciduous. The alternate, usually at the end of the branches concentrated leaves are stalked. Stipules absent.

The Nyssa species are dioecious getrenntgeschlechtig ( dioecious ). The unisexual flowers are in capitate or short racemose inflorescences together in the axils of a support sheet with two cover sheets.

The male flowers are fünfzählig. There are two circles, each with five stamens present. The discus is convex.

The female flowers are four - or fünfzählig. Most staminodes are present. The under constant ovary usually has one, rarely two chambers, each with one ovule.

Are formed laterally flattened drupes that remain in cup and disc are available. The stylus is in two parts.

Systematics and distribution

The genus Nyssa belongs to " Laurasisischen Tertiary Flora" and was formerly species-rich. The genus Nyssa owns a disjoint area: in North, Central America and South to Southeast Asia. Of the twelve species are four in North America, one in Costa Rica and Panama, one of these five there home to endemic species in China from India to the Indonesian archipelago and seven. Most of the species native to China are considered endangered.

Synonyms for Nyssa Gronov. ex L. are: Agathisanthes flower and Ceratostachys flower. The genus Nyssa was formerly classified in the family of Cornaceae.

In the genus Tupelobäume ( Nyssa ), there are about twelve species:

  • Nyssa javanica (Blume ) Wangerin: With a wide distribution: Bhutan, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam and the Chinese provinces of Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Yunnan.
  • Nyssa leptophylla WPFang & TPChen: It is endemic in Hunan at altitudes of about 1000 meters.
  • Nyssa shangszeensis WPFang & Soong: It is endemic in evergreen forests in the southwestern Guangxi ( Shangsi ) at an altitude of about 300 meters.
  • Nyssa shweliensis ( WWSmith ) Airy Shaw: The home is the western Yunnan at altitudes 1700-2700 meters; also maybe Vietnam.
  • Chinese Tupelo ( Nyssa sinensis Oliver ): The home is China at altitude 300-1700 meters and Vietnam.
  • Nyssa wenshanensis WPFang & Soong: It is endemic in evergreen forests in southeastern Yunnan at altitudes of about 1900 meters.
  • Nyssa yunnanensis WQYin ex HNQin & Phengklai: It is endemic in southern Yunnan at altitudes between 500 and 1100 meters.
  • Water tupelo ( Nyssa aquatica L.): It thrives in most cases in swamp forests along with Taxodium distichum in the southeastern United States.
  • Nyssa biflora Walter: It thrives in the United States from New Jersey to Florida and Texas.
  • Ogeche - tupelo ( Nyssa ogeche W.Bartram ex Marshall)
  • Black tupelo ( Nyssa sylvatica Marshall)
  • Nyssa talamancana Hammel & Zamora: Your home is Costa Rica and Panama. It was described in 1990 and has the largest fruits of all extant and extinct species.

Use

From some species the fruits are eaten or processed. The wood is utilized. From the bark of a dye produced.
