Turkish Language Association

The Türk Dil Kurumu (TDK, German: " Institute for the Turkish Language" ) is an agency of the Republic of Turkey to reform the Turkish language. Head of the Institute is currently Şükrü Halûk Akalın.

History

The institute was founded in 1923 proclaimed the Republic of Turkey on July 12, 1932 under the presidency of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, under the name Türk Dili Tetkik Cemiyeti and received its present name in 1936. Co-founder was the ethnologist Hamit Zübeyir Koşay. As of 1934, the Armenian turkologist Agop Dilâçar was the first Secretary of the Institute and maintained this position up to his death. The main task of the Institute is the standardization, modernization and Turkification the language.
