Tyndrum

Tyndrum ( taɪndrʌm ), is a village in Scotland. Its Gaelic name Taigh to Droma means house on the ridge. It is in the broad alpine valley Strath Fillan at the south end of Rannoch Moor, below the 1130 m high Ben Lui.

History

According to tradition, is Tyndrum near the battlefield of Dalrigh. Robert the Bruce is there, on the retreat, after he was defeated by the English at Methven, have been attacked by the Clan MacDougall and have suffered another defeat.

Tyndrum is a former mining center. The hamlet of Clifton is a number of former miners' cottages along the A82. Above this settlement are mine dumps a former lead mine. The gold mine of Beinn Chùirn located 3 km southwest of Tyndrum in the Cononish farm. The mine was shut due to lack of profitability. Given the high price of gold is planned (as of 2011 ) to open it again. The mine is expected to employ 53 people and produce more than four tons of gold and 16 tons of silver within 10 years.

Traffic

The village is situated at a traffic junction. About 8 km south fork in the West Highland Line railway into a branch to Fort William and Oban. Tyndrum therefore has two railway stations, Upper Tyndrum at Fort William branch and Lower Tyndrum on the Oban branch. The two stations are walking apart a few hundred meters, the train, the distance but about 16 km. Tyndrum is the smallest settlement in the United Kingdom with more than one station. This is partly a result of the history of Scotland's railways because two railway lines of two different railway companies were laid through the town. Secondly, follow the two lines of the local topography: Branching in Crianlarich, the two lines can follow the course of the valleys and not have to overcome steep inclines.

The roads also follow this division. The A82 from Glasgow to Fort William passes through Tyndrum; the A85 to Oban branches north from the resort.

Tourism

Tyndrum is a popular destination for tourists. It lies on the West Highland Way. Hikers and other tourists can find accommodation at the campsite, hotel, an inn or in one of the Bed and Breakfasts.
