Ü (region)

Ü ( Tibetan དབུས dbus =, the center ') is the old Central Tibetan (cultural) province with its capital Lhasa and, together with the further west adjoining province of Tsang (Tibetan gtsang, based in Shigatse ) the cultural and historical heart of the highlands, the therefore usually as " Central Tibet " (Tib. Ü -Tsang ) is called. Geographically it is located in the southern part of the Tibetan plateau, while it was political, religious and economic center of the dominion of the Dalai Lamas for centuries. To the west it borders the province of Tsang, north to the high steppes of the Chang Tang, in the Himalayas bordering south Lhokha ( = " Southern Region "), and to the east by Kham.
