Ubuntu One
Ubuntu One was the company Canonical, a file hosting service.
The service was primarily intended for users of the Ubuntu Operating System, but was also with the operating systems Windows, Mac, Android and mobile available. Ubuntu One, it allowed users via a central server to synchronize data between multiple computers or between computers and mobile phones. Attached also was an online music service, which also enabled the streaming to mobile phones. The offer could be used both on client software or via a web interface. The service is on the server side set on 1 June 2014. User data will be stored until July 31 and will then be deleted.

History
The service was recorded in May 2009, with a public beta phase. The initially necessary to use it to apply for access codes accounted for the end of July. In early October, the available space for paying customers was increased to 50 GB. In the end of October 2009 published version 9.10 of Ubuntu, the service has been integrated into the distribution. With the release of Ubuntu 10.10 in October 2010 ended the beta status, and the payment model has changed. In April 2014, Canonical CEO Jane Silber announced in a blog posting on the setting of the Services and the publication of the existing code as open source software.
Function and operation
Ubuntu One put an identically- directory in the user directory. There stored files have been transferred when the Internet connection using the client software Ubuntu One client to the server. Other computers that were connected to the same user account in Ubuntu One, the modified files could also synchronize using this software.
In addition to simple file synchronization Ubuntu One could also synchronize other data such as contacts from the address book of evolution or notes of Tomboy program.
Web interface
The Ubuntu One client only served to transmit the data to the server. The data was created and edited in the program on the computer each competent. So for example contact details are edited with evolution. If the data but once uploaded to the server, some operations can also be performed in the browser by a web interface. This provides the following functions (as of November 2009):
- Manage files, so upload, download, create folders, delete files and folders, share folders with other users. All changes made here will be applied to all furnished with this account calculator.
- Edit address books that synchronize with the E -mail software evolution on your own computer
- Edit notes that synchronize with the note program Tomboy. This feature will be removed as of February 27, 2012. Synchronizing the notes will continue to be possible.
In the future, this functionality will be expanded.

Technology
On the client side there is written in Python, Ubuntu One client for Ubuntu Version 9:04 with a daemon for data synchronization and an applet for the panel to the desktop environment, which notified when transmissions and interruptions. For synchronization, the software Twisted and Protocol Buffers is for the protocol description used. The data of specific applications such as Tomboy can be synchronized by providing access to a local CouchDB instance.
Were stored data on servers in the UK and were thus subject to European data protection law.
Ubuntu One Mobile
In cooperation with Funambol SyncML -based approach for synchronization of contacts with mobile phones was offered.
Ubuntu One Music Store
The Ubuntu One Music Store (in cooperation with 7digital ) containing MP3 -encoded songs in 256 kbps or higher bit rate without DRM. The integration in Ubuntu was made directly from the GNOME music player Rhythmbox or Banshee on using an extension. Purchased songs were transferred in addition to the local copy in the online space of the user and could be synchronized with any connected computer. Depending on the booked package also streaming on a mobile phone was possible from there.
Criticism
The name Ubuntu is in the public for free and open source software, while the applications running on the server parts of Ubuntu One are proprietary. This is seen by many members of the Linux community as a misappropriation of the reputation of Ubuntu. Announcing the behavior of the commercial business by Jane Silber, Canonical announced the release of the code as open source software.
