Ubuntu One

Ubuntu One was the company Canonical, a file hosting service.

The service was primarily intended for users of the Ubuntu Operating System, but was also with the operating systems Windows, Mac, Android and mobile available. Ubuntu One, it allowed users via a central server to synchronize data between multiple computers or between computers and mobile phones. Attached also was an online music service, which also enabled the streaming to mobile phones. The offer could be used both on client software or via a web interface. History

Function and operation

Technology

On the client side there is written in Python, Ubuntu One client for Ubuntu Version 9:04 with a daemon for data synchronization and an applet for the panel to the desktop environment, which notified when transmissions and interruptions. The data of specific applications such as Tomboy can be synchronized by providing access to a local CouchDB instance.

Ubuntu One Music Store

The Ubuntu One Music Store (in cooperation with 7digital ) containing MP3 -encoded songs in 256 kbps or higher bit rate without DRM. The integration in Ubuntu was made directly from the GNOME music player Rhythmbox or Banshee on using an extension. Purchased songs were transferred in addition to the local copy in the online space of the user and could be synchronized with any connected computer. Criticism

The name Ubuntu is in the public for free and open source software, while the applications running on the server parts of Ubuntu One are proprietary. This is seen by many members of the Linux community as a misappropriation of the reputation of Ubuntu.
