UEFA Euro 2000 qualifying

The qualifying matches for the European Football Championship 2000 took place up to November 17, 1999 June 4, 1998.

49 of 51 member countries of the UEFA played among themselves the 14 places in the Euro 2000. The Netherlands and Belgium were set to host countries and completed the field of 16 finalists.

Qualification mode

The qualifications included 228 games, of which 220 matches were played in group mode. The 49 teams were drawn against each one of the nine groups in the qualifying draw. Five of these nine groups each played with five teams in four groups had six teams against each other.

Direct qualified for the final round to the nine group winners of the group matches, as well as the best-placed second. The remaining four starting positions were playing the other eight runners-up in previously resolved relegation matches from among themselves.

Case of a tie between two teams after the group said the regulations that the team qualifies, who decided to directly compare for yourself. If no better team could be determined by this comparison, the goal difference and then counted the number of goals scored away from the directly opposite each other out encounters. If after these comparisons still no better team could be determined, then, all results of the group matches (comparison of goal difference, number of goals scored, away goals ) are used, and if then still should be equality, decided by the Fair Play ranking.

Worth mentioning was the qualifying match between the German and the Turkish national team on 9 October 1999 at the Olympiastadion in Munich. Although it was negotiated to a home game of the German national team, were from the 63 572 spectators according to estimates, about 50,000 supporters of Turkey.

Play off

The runners-up of each group were then compared in a table. The best-placed team in this table automatically qualified for the European Championship. To have opportunities for comparison, only the results of the teams against the First, Third and Fourth of the respective qualifying group were used. The remaining eight teams had to unsubscribe to the playoffs four free places. The lots were drawn in an open draw.

The first legs were played on 13 November, the return games followed on 17 November 1999.
