Ulrich II, Duke of Carinthia

Ulrich II (c. 1176; † August 10, 1202 ) from the noble Spannheimer was 1181-1202 Duke of Carinthia.

Life and work

Ulrich was the eldest son of Duke Hermann of Carinthia and Agnes, daughter of Duke Henry Jasomirgott of Austria.

Under the tutelage of his uncle, the Babenberg Duke Leopold V, he followed after the death of his father in 1181 as Duke of Carinthia. So he could as a ward of course, from 1186, as it gradually approached the end with the last Traungau Duke of Styria, enforce no Spannheimer - claims against his guardian. As of 1194, Ulrich II reigned independently and was, like his predecessors Staufer support. 1197 he participated in the Crusade of the Emperor Henry VI. to the Holy Land in part. 1198/99 he was unfit to rule because of illness.

His successor as Regent or as Duke after his death in 1202 was his younger brother Bernard of Spanheim.
