Ulrich K. Preuss

Ulrich Klaus Preuss ( born December 6, 1939) is a German legal and political scientist.

Preuss studied from 1960 to 1964 at the Christian -Albrechts -University of Kiel and the Free University of Berlin Law. He earned his doctorate in 1968 at the University of Giessen. In 1969, he was among the founders of the Socialist Prosecutor collective. From 1966 to 1972 he was employed as a research assistant at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin. He was Professor of Public Law at the University of Bremen, where he taught until 1996 1972. Preuss was 1989/1990 involved for the New Forum in the preparation of a draft of a new Constitution of the German Democratic Republic of the Round Table. In the academic year 1989/1990 Preuss was a Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study Berlin. 1992/1993 he was an advisory member of the Constitutional Committee of Thuringia to draft a state constitution on the proposal of the Alliance 90/The Greens. He became a judge on the Constitutional Court of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen in 1992. He was from 1996 professor at the Free University of Berlin, where he taught Public Law and Policy at the Otto -Suhr- Institute until his retirement in 2005. Preuss has held visiting professorships at Princeton University, the New School University in New York and the University of Chicago Law School. From September 2005 to September 2010 was Ulrich K. Preuss at the Hertie School of Governance Professor of Constitutional Theory.

Preuss research interests are devoted to the political theory of the state and the constitutional and legal theory.

Preuss reimbursed in 1973 as a lawyer by Ulrike Meinhof criminal charges of bodily harm against the then Minister of Justice of North Rhine -Westphalia Diether Posser due to strict solitary confinement Meinhof in prison Cologne Ossett in the period 16 June 1972 to 9 February 1973. As defender Preuss was involved together with Heinrich Hannover and Frankfurt lawyer Johannes Riemann at the trial of Astrid Proll 1979/1980.

Honors

2012 Preuss was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Bremen.
