Ulster Orchestra

The Ulster Orchestra is Northern Ireland's only full-time symphony orchestra and one of the leading orchestras in the United Kingdom.

History

The orchestra was originally founded on 28 September 1966 as a radio orchestra with 37 musicians.

The first chief conductor was Maurice Miles, the first concertmaster of the Hungarian violinist and conductor János Fürst. In its present form the Orchestra since 1981, when the BBC Northern Ireland Orchestra dissolved and the Ulster Orchestra was made up with musicians from there to 55 members. Currently, there is the orchestra of 63 musicians. Mostly are the orchestra 's concerts at the Ulster Hall and Waterfront Hall, partly in the Elmwood Hall, both in Belfast.
