Ungheni, MureÈ™

Ungheni (deprecated Niraşteu, Nyaradfluß German, Hungarian Nyárádtő ) is a town in Mureş county in Romania.

Location

Ungheni is located approximately in the center of Transylvania, at the mouth of the River Niraj into the Mureş. The county town Targu Mures is located about 10 km northeast.

History

Archaeological finds evidence of a settlement in the region since the Paleolithic period and the Bronze Age. The town was first mentioned in 1264 under the name Naradtew; at that time the village belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary. 1601 Ungheni was burnt down by troops of the Austrian General Giorgio Basta. Also, during the debates of the revolution 1848/1849 the place had to suffer destruction.

After the First World War came Ungheni - like the rest of Transylvania - Romania. As a result of the Second Vienna Award of the City from 1940 to 1944, despite his Romanian majority again a part of Hungary, and was at this time directly on the Hungarian- Romanian border.

The long, country-style place gained in importance in 1969 by the opening of the airport Târgu Mureş on the territory of the municipality.

An Orthodox church is a native of the 18th century Greek Catholic church built (see picture) - Since 1997, in Ungheni - in the opinion of critics illegal. This had been appropriated by the communist authorities in 1948 to the Orthodox Church. In May 2008, the demolition of the Greek Catholic Church began. This process was mentioned in the " International Religious Freedom Report 2008" of the U.S. State Department.

In 2004 Ungheni was declared a city.

The main industries are agriculture and food processing.

Population

In the 1850 census had a population of 3,339 on the territory of today's 2,995 Romanians, 188 Hungarians, 156 Roma. Of these, 638 lived in Ungheni in the strict sense, the others in the now incorporated villages. In 2002, in the town of 6,554 people registered, including 5,241 Romanians, 710 Roma and 599 Hungary. 3,562 lived in the city proper, 2,992 eingemeindeten in the six villages.

Traffic

Ungheni lies on the railway line Alba Iulia Târgu Mureş; In the area of the city is the General Nicolae Dăscălescu station. In both directions, at about eight commuter trains daily. There are regular bus services to Târgu Mureş. By Ungheni leads the European Route 60
