Union Island

Union Iceland is one of the southernmost islands of the borne out by independent island state of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Located in the Caribbean island is one of the group of geographically Grenadines.

Main villages on the island are Clifton Harbour and Ashton. Union Iceland has an international airport from which ( about 70 km north- northeast near major island) Saint Vincent and some other islands of the Grenadines, and Barbados, Carriacou, Grenada and Martinique are served.

Geography

Due to its volcanic silhouette is called the island of Tahiti also of the West Indies. Surrounding islands are Tobago Cays, Mayreau, Palm Iceland and Petit St. Vincent. Union Iceland is 4.5 km long and 1.5 km wide. The highest mountain is Mount Taboi in the west with 304 meters, which is significantly higher than Mount Parnassus with 275 meters.

History

On the Native Arawak and Carib Indians, followed by the French and British colonization. The Europeans brought hundreds of Africans to the island, mainly from Cameroon and Angola. After the abolition of slavery the blacks lived by farming and fishing.

Economy

Charter of yachts today creates a lot of the jobs. There are also numerous shops and supermarkets, bars and restaurants, internet cafes and a diving school. Furthermore, there are three hotels on the island.
