United Nations Security Council Resolution 1559

Resolution 1559 of the UN Security Council adopted at its 5082nd meeting on 2 September 2004. In it, the withdrawal of all foreign troops from Lebanon and the disarming and disbanding of all militias active in Lebanon were required as well as the Lebanese government pledged support for the extension of its authority throughout the territory.

The resolution is understood as an invitation to Syria to withdraw its troops present in the country since 1976 and the end of his political influence in Lebanon and Hezbollah to dissolve its military wing.
