United Nations Security Council Resolution 1566

The resolution 1566 of the UN Security Council ( UNSCR 1566) of 8 October 2004 forms the basis in international law for various activities to combat terrorism.

The UN Security Council condemned in terrorism and calls on the world community to " in accordance with their obligations under international law to cooperate fully ."

Its importance consists among other things in its internationally legally binding definition of terrorism, which goes far beyond the specific occasion of Al -Qaeda Terrorism:

The UN Security Council " Recalls that criminal acts, including against civilians, committed with the intent to cause death or serious bodily injury, or taking of hostages that are committed with the aim of the whole population, a group of people or individuals to put in fear and terror to intimidate a population or a government or an international organization to compel to any act or omission on which the offenses referred to and defined as such by the international conventions and protocols relating constitute terrorism, are under no circumstances justifiable can, by political, philosophical, ideological, racial, ethnic, religious or other similar nature are given, and calls upon all States to prevent such acts and, if they can not be avoided, ensure that for those punished by penalties that correspond to " the seriousness of the offense.
