United Nations Security Council Resolution 212

Resolution 212 of the UN Security Council is a resolution that was decided by the United Nations Security Council in the session 1243. September 20, 1965. It is concerned to be admitted to membership in the United Nations with the request of the Maldives. The Security Council recommends to the General Assembly of the UN to include the Maldives.

Background

During the 1950s and 1960s Britain was retreating from the area east of the Suez Canal. On 26 July 1965, Ibrahim Nasir Rannabandeyri Kilegefan, (Prime Minister of the Maldives ) and Sir Michael Walker, British Ambassador agreed as representatives of their leaders on ending the British protectorate over the Maldives and to granted independence.
