United States gubernatorial elections, 1973

The gubernatorial elections in the United States in 1973 were held on November 6, 1973. Was elected to the states of New Jersey and Virginia.

New Jersey

In New Jersey Democrat Brendan Byrne won the election and replaced the 1969 elected Republican William T. Cahill from, who lost the preselection against his Pareteifreund and Congressman Charles Sandman and no longer stood for election. Byrne reached 66.4 percent of the vote. The defeated Sandman came to 32.12 percent. Of the ten other candidates, some of the smaller parties belonged partly independently stood as candidates, none achieved a share of more than 0.31 percent.

Virginia

In Virginia, the independent candidate and Lieutenant Governor Henry E. Howell went against the Republicans Mills E. Godwin, who had already been governor from 1966 to 1970 for the Democratic Party, into the race. The outcome of the election was very close: with 14,972 vote lead Godwin prevailed. He reached 50.72 percent of the vote. Howell came to 49.28 percent.
