The gubernatorial election in the state of Wisconsin already took place on June 5, 2012. It was a so-called recall election, which had been brought by the Democrats to deselect the in office only since 17 months Republican Governor Scott Walker in the middle of his term. Walker was encountered because of its resistance to austerity, in particular its cuts for public employees were extremely unpopular. As part of the austerity measures there were mass protests, especially in front of the Wisconsin State Capitol in Madison, which included at the height of more than 100,000 participants. The Democrats Tom Barrett, Mayor of Milwaukee launched a signature campaign and collected 900,000 signatures ( 360,000 more than required) for early holding of an election for governor. After an intensive and relatively costly ( estimated $ 80 million, compared to $ 37 million in the gubernatorial election in 2010 ) election was won by the incumbent Walker and his running mate Rebecca Kleefisch choosing a surprising degree with 1,335,585 votes ( 53.1 %) against 1,164 .480 ( 46.3 %) for the duo Tom Barrett / Mahlon Mitchell of the Democratic Party.
