Togiola Tulafono

Togiola Talalelei A. Tulafono ( born February 28, 1947 in Aunuu, American Samoa ) is the reigning Governor of American Samoa. He is a member of the Democratic Party.

As the incumbent governor Tauese Pita Fiti Sunia died suddenly on 26 March 2003, Togiola Tulafono took over as Deputy Governor, the Office of the Governor as acting and it was officially confirmed on 7 April of the same year. 2004 Tulafono could prevail in the November election against his opponent Afoa Moega Lutu with 56% to 44%. In the 2008 gubernatorial election neither Tulafono (41%) nor his Republican opponent Utu Abe Malae could unite ( 31%) of the required absolute majority of votes. The subsequent runoff election won Tulafono significantly with 56.5 % compared to 43.5 % and was thus re-elected for another term.
