Thomas C. Latimore

Thomas Calloway Latimore († probably on Oahu, Hawaii Territory, declared dead on 19 July 1942) was an American naval officer. In 1934 he was Governor of American Samoa for seven days. His disappearance in the summer of 1941 has not been elucidated to date.

Career

In 1917 was promoted to lieutenant in the United States Navy from Ensign Thomas Latimore. This can be seen on a previous study of close to a naval academy. Between 10 and 17 April 1934, he was appointed acting military governor of American Samoa. He then worked for a short time for the Naval Intelligence in Washington DC.

In 1941 he was appointed captain of the destroyer USS Dobbin supply ship. The ship was stationed at Pearl Harbor. Latimore wandered in his spare time in the mountains around Pearl Harbor. One day in April 1941, he returned with an arm injury from such a hike and claimed to have been injured in a fall. He wore a bandage and after some time the incident was forgotten. In July 1941, he was seen for the last time, just as he set off again for a hike, from which he never returned. When his disappearance was noticed, a major search operation was launched, which was unsuccessful. To date, we have found no trace of his whereabouts. This incident hit the headlines in Hawaii until the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941. Afterwards, there was speculation as to whether Latimores disappearance could be related to the Japanese attack. These were aimed in the direction that he had possibly observed in his walk with the Japanese spies scouting the area and had been removed from them. However, nothing is provable. On 19 July 1942 Thomas Latimore was officially declared dead.
