Vernon Huber

Vernon Huber ( born August 28, 1899 in Philadelphia, Cass County, Illinois, † June 17, 1967 in Los Altos, California ) was an American naval officer. Between 1947 and 1949 he was military governor of American Samoa.

Career

Between 1918 and 1922, graduated from Vernon Huber, the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis (Maryland). In the following years, he served on various ships as an officer in the U.S. Navy. At the end of his military career he had brought it to the Rear Admiral. He served during the Second World War, especially in the Atlantic and commanded during this time the destroyer USS Livermore.

Huber was known primarily as Governor of American Samoa. This office he held between 22 April 1947 to 7 July 1949 as a successor to Harold Alexander Houser. During this time, he promoted the autonomy of the local population. At that time, the first time met the local Parliament American Samoa Fono. However, the governor retained veto power over the decisions of this House of Representatives.

After the end of his time as governor Huber remained in the Navy until 1953, where he held a number of staff and command posts. He died on 17 June 1967 in a hospital in Los Altos.
