The gubernatorial elections in the United States in 1985 were held on November 5, 1985. Was elected to the states of New Jersey and Virginia.

Here the four years previously selected in New Jersey from governorship Republican Thomas Kean could run for another term in office and was also set up again by his party. The Democratic Party nominated as opposition candidate Peter Shapiro, a Member of the House of Representatives from New Jersey, who defeated the incumbent, however, had no chance. Kean was elected with 69.6 percent of the vote in a second term, Shapiro came to only 29.3 percent. In addition, five other candidates competed, whose shares were moving 0.1 to 0.43 percent. Among them was Jules Levin, 1976 presidential candidate of the Socialist Labor Party, who finished in sixth place with 0.14 percent of the vote.

In Virginia, where is considered a term limit of four years for the governors, it was not the Democratic incumbent Chuck Robb thus possible to reapply. In its place, the Democrats nominated by the Attorney General of Virginia, Gerald L. Baliles, the 55.2 percent of the vote clearly argue against the Republicans Wyatt B. Durrette, Member of the House of Representatives of Virginia, prevailed.
