United States Penitentiary, Atlanta

The United States Penitentiary, Atlanta is a U.S. federal prison in Atlanta, the capital of the state of Georgia. It has the medium security level.

History

In 1899 the building was decided on and completed in January 1902. It houses 1,200 inmates on average. In the 1980s there Cuban refugees were interned. This rebelled in November 1987 eleven days after they were left on their fate uncertain.

The main building was designed by the architectural firm Eames and Young from St. Louis, Missouri.
