Universitas Istropolitana

The Universitas Istropolitana ( since the 16th century often incorrectly referred to as Academia Istropolitana ) in Pressburg ( now Bratislava ) was the first university that was founded on the territory of Slovakia. As today's successor agency applies the Comenius University in Bratislava. The word is derived from Istropolitana Istropolis ( " Danube City " ), the gräzisierenden name for Bratislava.

It was founded in 1465 by Pope Paul II, on behalf of the Hungarian king Matthias Corvinus. It was the only university of the former Kingdom of Hungary. Numerous well-known lecturers from Austria, Italy and Poland were teaching at the University, including Galeotto Marzio and Johann Vitez. The university was closed in 1490 after Corvinus ' death as the financing failed to materialize. The university building in the Renaissance style still exists today and houses the College of Performing Arts.
