University of Neuchâtel

The University of Neuchâtel (French Université de Neuchâtel ) was founded in 1909 in Neuchâtel in Switzerland. It has five faculties.

History

The university dates back to a 1838 by Frederick William IV of Prussia, then Prince of Neuchâtel, founded the Academy, which was closed in 1848 by the Grand Council in 1866 and reopened in 1909 converted into a university.

Profile

The University of Neuchâtel has today approximately 4,200 students and 587 academic staff with 117 professors. About 55 percent of students are female.

Faculties

The University accommodates five faculties:

  • Humanities and Human Sciences ( Faculté des Lettres et Sciences Humaines )
  • Natural Sciences ( Faculté des Sciences )
  • Law ( Faculté de Droit )
  • Theology ( Faculté de Théologie )
  • Economics ( Faculté des Sciences Economiques )

The main building, in which a part of the administration and the Faculté des Sciences sociales et économiques and part of the Faculté de Droit are housed, as well as the building of the Faculté des Lettres et Sciences Humaines are located directly on Lake Neuchâtel.

With about 1,400 students, the Faculté des Lettres et Sciences Humaines is the largest faculty of the university. Here degrees are offered in: English language and literature, archeology, ethnology, geography, German, history, journalism, classical philology, art history, linguistics, pedagogy, philosophy, psychology and romance languages ​​.

The Faculty of Theology offers the opportunity to study Protestant theology together with the universities of Geneva and Lausanne.

Institute

The most important institutions are the following:

  • Laboratoire de traitement du langage et de la parole
  • Centre des recherches sémiologiques
  • Institut de langue et civilization françaises
  • Institut de l' ethology et de l' anthropologie, with the connected Musée d' ethnography.

International reputation, the University of Neuchâtel for their Institute of Biology, Anthropology, Public Health Law, microtechnology and for the Institut de recherches économiques et Clarisse ( IRER ).

Administration

The annual budget of the University of Neuchâtel is about 120 million Swiss francs, which fall from 30 million to research loans.

On 5 February 2007 the rector Alfred Meier straw was summarily dismissed. As rector ad interim appointed by the cantonal government of Jean -Pierre Derendinger. Since summer 2008, the first rector of the French speaking Switzerland, Martine Rahier, in office.
