For double Abiturjahrgang in WS 2013/14 there were around 3,400 students, which means an increase of about three percent compared to the previous year.

The central theme "The University of the Information Society" following, the research focus is on the one hand in the fields of computer science, economics, engineering and mathematics, and on the other side in the humanities and social sciences ( above all in English, Medieval History and German ).

Of particular importance is the subject computer science, the CHE / part Time in the overall assessment of the first three faculties in Germany in the university ranking 2006. The economy of computer science at the University of Paderborn was named one of the CHE Ranking 2005 also the foremost group. In the same ranking of 2005, which specialized English language and literature / English is on one of the first places. Just finished the university in the German Research Foundation (DFG ) 2006 Funding Ranking in electrical engineering, computer science, systems engineering a placement in the top field. The University of Paderborn could plan to research external funding with 37.6 million euros in 2010. Because of the great demand for places from all over Germany and Europe 43 courses with a numerus clausus (NC) were occupied since the winter semester 2006/2007 at the University of Paderborn, which in individual subjects gets too big in part because of the numerous applicants.

In addition to the many offerings by the university itself and the chairs of the student groups often offer numerous additional activities.

History

The on August 1, 1972 re-established as a Polytechnic University of Paderborn, which included several polytechnic departments adjacent to the University, was founded in 2002 exclusive university. When it was founded in 1972 as a modern university, they could look back on a long academic tradition through its predecessor institutions in Paderborn.

Here taught some years Friedrich Spee of Langenfeld, who became famous for his efforts against the persecution of witches with his Cautio criminalis. The university is on today in the form of the Faculty of Theology.

The founding in 1972 as a Comprehensive University School was a merger of the College of Education Westphalia -Lippe ( PH) and in particular the Fachhochschule Southeast Westphalia, in which public engineering schools Paderborn, Hoexter, Meschede and Soest and the Higher business school Paderborn and Soest School of Engineering were summarized for farming. It was initiated by the Council Mrs Ellen rust, the PH Institute Director Helmar Gunter Frank and the Paderborn computer pioneer Heinz Nixdorf. Nixdorf this helped the University to become an international focus of research in computer science.

In 1790, the Normal School was founded in Paderborn for teacher education. In December 1946, the Educational Academy for Teacher Training in Paderborn, in a College of Education (PH ) was converted in 1962 was born. This was established in 1965 to one of the five departments of the College of Education Westphalia -Lippe.

The Engineering School of Civil Engineering in Hoexter went back to the built in 1864 in Hoexter Baugewerkschule. She was the first of its kind in Prussia. In 1963, the School of Engineering Paderborn was prepared with the subjects of engineering and process engineering and electrical engineering. The same subjects also provided the engineering school in Soest, which was founded in 1964 with an office in Meschede, at. Already in 1968, the site in Meschede as company technical school became independent.

The existing from the beginning connection between Heinz Nixdorf and the University of Paderborn in 1987 found expression in the establishment of the Heinz Nixdorf Institute ( HNI ). This interdisciplinary research institute is one of the central research facilities of the University.

The number of students increased from 4,400 in the beginning of the winter semester 1972/73 rapidly. Although the former polytechnic departments in Hoexter, Meschede and Soest have now been merged into independent universities, the number of students in the winter semester 2012/13 has risen to around 18,500.

The university has produced several winners of the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG ) in the last years. Worldwide attention was aroused the report submitted by the Romanian mathematician Preda Mihăilescu at the University of Paderborn in April 2002, evidence of Catalan'schen Guess who's on the Belgian mathematician Eugène Charles Catalan ( 1814-1894 ) declining. The latter formulated in 1844 the assumption that only the two powers, and by the value 1 differ.

From scientific importance is also attached to the German Studies at the University of Paderborn Institute for the Study of the famous Princely Library of Corvey in Hoexter, has worked in the August Heinrich Hoffmann von Faller life.

Of international importance as the is based at the University of Paderborn coordinating body (including a research professor ) for the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In October 2004, she received the negative price Big Brother Award in the category " Regional" for their camera surveillance in lecture halls and computer labs.

On 25 April 2007, the University of Paderborn chose the first university of North Rhine -Westphalia, according to the University Freedom Act a University Council. This consists of Hubertus Benteler, Herbert Hanselmann ( dSPACE GmbH), Gertrud Hohler ( journalist, political and business consultant ), Jutta Lange Bacher Liebgott ( University of Paderborn ), Friedhelm Meyer auf der Heide ( University of Paderborn ), Winfried Schulze ( Ludwig- Maximilians- University of Munich), Leena Suhl ( University of Paderborn ), and Klaus Töpfer ( Federal Environment Minister D., Director of the UN Environment Programme ret. ).

The Innovation Prize of North Rhine Westphalia was awarded in 2008 in the Innovation category at the two Paderborn Professors Reinhold Noé and Ulrich Rückert on the basis of their research on optical communications.

Campus

Warburger road

The main part of the University is located in Paderborn between the road and the Warburg Pohlweg.

The oldest buildings date back to the time of the state school of engineering and with the letter P (P1- P7) respectively.

The Paderborn University but was essentially planned together with other universities in NRW, so find yourself a similar style and in part the same building modules even at the Universities of Dortmund, Duisburg- Essen, Siegen and Wuppertal. The core of this building is a square, labeled clockwise A to D. At the corners are followed by other, outwardly facing building, E, H and J. The name of the building derives support of her position on imaginary concentric circles from. The building I came later than link building to building N (the former FEoLL ) added.

Relatively new is the building W, which is followed by the RailCab test site. In January 2006 a new building was completed in P8. The building F (Heinz Nixdorf Institute ) is not located on campus. In the winter semester of 2007, the new auditorium G was completed with about 420 seats beyond.

There are also various special buildings such as the library (BI ), the refectory (ME ) and the main lecture hall (AM).

The building, completed in 2011 K- connects on the northeast by the J- building and provides since winter semester 2010 /11 additional laboratory space for chemistry students are available. The fiscally configured as an extension building O building was near the Südring on the former site of the Campus Hotels (west of RailCab site) completed in 2012.

Our goal - to provide an integrated Wohn-/Lern-Konzept part of the student union, which is aimed primarily at student loan recipients - in addition to the creation of additional units. As another special, subject-related building the West Extension of the northwest building on 17 December 2009 was completed. The total of 2.8 million euro increase in the cultivation hall northwest of the Dean of Chemistry offers from the middle of the winter semester 2009/10 approximately 90 students in three classrooms space, 40 offices are scientific researchers available. The modular design provides for the connection of the new hall to the northwest to be finished, located east K building front through a passage tunnel across the core area of the building part J.

In addition to the winter semester 2010/ 11, four tents (Z1 -Z4 ) were built north of the main lecture hall; they should catch a part of the emerging shortage of space temporarily. They offered each course and 80 students were like a normal conference room equipped.
