The University was founded in 1968 Salerno (Italian: Università degli Studi di Salerno, UNISA, Latin: Civitas Hippocratica study Salerni ) is one of the younger universities in Italy. With its Faculty of Medicine and Surgery can their tradition, however, refer back to the school of Salerno ( Schola Medica Salernitana ), an important medieval medical teaching and research institution. The University of Salerno has 10 faculties and around 40,000 enrolled students.

History

The origins of the University of Salerno date back to the 9th century and allow the university to include with Paris and Bologna, one of the oldest universities in Europe. The School of Salerno ( Schola Medica Salernitana ), founded in the 9th century is regarded as one of the first medical teaching and research facilities in Europe. Its heyday was from the 10th to the 13th century when they with their medical exemplarity acquired Salerno town the nickname " City of Hippocrates " (Latin Civitas Hippocratica ). Here was combined independent anatomical research with the traditional medical knowledge of Greek, Arabic, Latin and the Western- Jewish world.

The Medical College remained until the 19th century, when it was closed in 1811 by the Bonapartist king of Naples, Joachim Murat. In 1944, the re-opening as " Giovanni Cuomo " College of Education ( Istituto Universitario di Magistero " Giovanni Cuomo " ) by Victor Emmanuel II. With the nationalization in 1968, the expansion of the faculties and renamed the " Università degli Studi di Salerno followed ". In 2005, the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery was re-established that continues in the tradition of the school of Salerno. The Seal of the University of Salerno's medieval epithet " Civitas Hippocratica " (city of Hippocrates ) is fed to the memory of it.

1988 moved into the fast -growing university new campus in the small town of Fisciano, a few kilometers from Salerno in Irno Valley. The ultra-modern campus university provides staff and students there a comprehensive service. Opened in 2005, the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery has its headquarters in Baronissi.
