UnixWare

UnixWare is a Unix-like system for the Intel x86 platform with support for multiprocessor systems, which ( USL ) has been developed based on UNIX SVR4 by the joint venture Univel between Novell and the Unix System Laboratories.

History of development

The USL developed from the late 1980s in collaboration with Sun Microsystems UNIX System V Release 4 Univel released the first version in November 1992, which was based on Release 4.2 of the kernel, developed by the USL UNIX System V.

Novell acquired in June 1993, the remaining shares of USL from AT & T and thus also Univel completely. The Novell Unix Systems Group was formed and took over the development.

In December 1995, the sale of Novell's Unix business to the Santa Cruz Operation was carried out ( the later Tarantella, Inc. ), the Unix division was acquired in 2001 by the SCO Group ( SCO Group since 2002 ). Published in early 1998 SCO UnixWare 7, which represents a convergence product from UnixWare 2 and OpenServer 5 and is based on UNIX SVR5. Known from Open Server Manager graphical system administration and OUDK development system were among the innovations.

UnixWare 7.1 came in 2000 on the market. New features include Webtop, enhancements for high availability and improved Java support. For failsafe systems, there was the UnixWare nonstop cluster developed in collaboration with Compaq, and later a smaller solution called UnixWare nonstop Cluster IP. In May 2001, the Unix business of SCO Caldera Systems was acquired. After switching to the Caldera UnixWare 7.1.2 in development was renamed in Caldera Open UNIX 8 and marketed under this name. The included "Linux Kernel Personality " allowed the high-performance execution of Linux applications without having to resort to emulation. After renaming of Caldera to " The SCO Group " is the name UnixWare returned in version 7.1.3 again. The new system included enhanced ports of open source programs and extensions for web services. " UnixWare " is a registered trademark of the Open Group and is used by the SCO Group under license.

Equipment

The scope of the operating system includes many enhancements:

  • File Systems VxFS - Veritas File System
  • DosFs - FAT file system from DOS
  • Cdfs - CD- ROM with Rock Ridge extensions and high Sierra/ISO9660
  • Bfs - the boot file system
  • Nucfs - Netware for Unix
  • S5 - the System V file system
  • TCP / IP, NFS, NIS
  • Netware Services

Editions

There are currently offered licenses for different editions. Optional components (eg merge ) or additional users and more memory require additional license fees. The previously valid restrictions on the maximum number of supported logical processors in 2008 was canceled for UnixWare 7.1.4.
